Thank God this year is over

This year’s ND squad has been nothing short of horrifically frustrating all year. Today was merely a microcosm. I’m very happy to never watch this squad again.

I’m just sad that’s how Michael Floyd had to end his career. You’re in my top 3 of favorite ND players I’ve gotten to watch Cannon. Would’ve been #1 easily had you not always been hurt. You deserved so much better.

Here’s hoping Rees follows Crist out the damn door.

That’s all for sake of brevity and no more bitter ranting. Figure my twitter feed got most of that out of the way tonight.

Week 2 College Football Pick Results

ESPN dubbed this past weekend as MONSTER SUNDAY RARRRRRRRRRRR. Not all of the games lived up to the hype, but there was plenty of fun. Virginia Tech jumped on their LOLlerskates this week to lose to James Madison. Gotta hurt Boise’s championship hopes, likely making people want to put TCU over BSU in the Cinderella rankings. Georgia Tech dropped a laugher to Kansas, who was also recently the victim of a hilarious upset by N Dakota St. But how about the games we picked. Jump Around

Not even angry, just…well…sad

For the 2nd year in a row, Notre Dame dropped a ballgame to the forever hated Michigan Wolverines in the last minute. This year was different in many ways from last, yet very similar in others.

For similarities, first you have a relative unknown puts up ridiculous numbers in a one man show at QB: Forcier for 310 total yards and a last minute touchdown last year, Robinson for an absurd 502 total yards and 3 TDs, including the dagger with 30 seconds left. Then there’s questionable coaching decisions from ND: Last year Weis inexplicably throwing the ball instead of trying to run the clock out late, this year Kelly refusing to kick the FG and take points at the end of the 1st half, or having a true frosh who comes in as a backup after an injury try to run a trick play as his 1st play. You of course also have ND making a late comeback only to give up a dagger in the end to lose.

Yet there was plenty different. Even more questions surrounding both teams this year than last. The biggest though is the QB injuries for the Irish. I’m encouraged by most of what I saw out of the Crist led offense. His first drive of the game and first drive back after injury showed just how dangerous and effective Brian Kelly’s offense can be. I also couldn’t be happier with Freshman WR TJ Jones, even if his name is redundant now. Kyle Rudolph continues to show why he’s the best TE in the country, and outside of the 96 yard TD and the 4th quarter, the defense actually played decent most of the way. That and the Cannon was not there, this was a mortal version of Michael Floyd we saw this weekend, with 3 big time drops on balls that were right to him. That needs to stop quick.

The real story here was obviously Crist’s injury and the abhorrent play of ND’s backups. Nate is not Joe. Let’s go ahead and state that for the record in case anybody was holding on to the thought of a possible 2nd coming (wink). He wouldn’t even look at an outside receiver, hell he looked like he was pretty much scared to throw the ball period. Tommy Rees may have had his year prematurely ended (psychological murder). I still don’t understand why you would have a true frosh run a trick play the first play he’s in after the starter gets injured. Even worse, if throws the pick after one play and you pull him, what does that tell him? Maybe Rees pulled himself, maybe he was too rattled, maybe he flat out wasn’t ready, but pulling the plug on the kid after one mistake could wreck his head.

All that being said, Denard Robinson was flat out phenomenal. ND contained him as long as they could, but the dude just flat out beat us. The thing that kills me though, is he only did it practically at the buzzer, when we were missing our QB1 for about 40% of the game. If Crist stays in, the way he ran the offense, I think we win that ballgame. Quite honestly, if BK took the points at the end of the 1st half and all the Irish need was a field goal at the end I think they still win it. But you know what, they didn’t win. Luckily from what I heard about his post game locker room speeches, he isn’t looking for moral victories, he’s looking for real ones. I like where the offense is going, but none of that really matters. Rex Ryan said it best on the 1st episode of Hard Knocks. There’s only one stat you need to be concerned with: Wins.
